The Toy Box Killer is a nickname given to David Parker Ray, an American serial kidnapper, torturer, rapist, and suspected serial killer. He was never convicted of murder, but he is believed to have killed as many as 60 women in Arizona and New Mexico.
Ray operated from a soundproofed trailer in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, which he referred to as his "Toy Box." With the assistance of accomplices, he would kidnap victims, bring them to the Toy Box, and subject them to horrific acts of torture and sexual assault. His methods were meticulously planned and involved the use of various tools and devices designed to inflict pain and control his victims.
His crimes came to light in 1999 when one of his victims, Kelly Van Cleave, escaped and alerted the authorities. Ray was arrested and subsequently convicted on multiple counts of kidnapping and torture. He was sentenced to a lengthy prison term but died of a heart attack in 2002.
Despite Ray's death, the full extent of his crimes remains unknown. Due to the lack of physical evidence and the involvement of numerous accomplices, many missing persons cases are suspected to be linked to him, though definitive proof has been elusive. The horrific nature of his crimes and the meticulous planning involved have cemented his place as one of America's most notorious criminals. The case continues to be discussed for the depravity and torture he inflicted on his victims, and the lack of definitive closure for many families of missing women.
